Day 5 : The Healing Challenge

PEACE IN THE STORM

We are on day 5 of the challenge and for some of you I believe you may feel like instead of being healed your symptoms may have gotten worse just like when i started feeling symptoms after sharing my testimony on instagram or you are wondering why after four days you haven’t received your healing. Well I have good news for you our topic for today is for you.

Our Bible reading today is Mark 4: 35-41 :

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace,[g] be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How[h] is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

I love this particular story particularly because of the intentionality of the first verse when Jesus said “Let us cross over to the other side”.  That statement was there for a purpose. Jesus told the disciples that they should cross over to the other side but then during their journey to the other side they faced a storm. Jesus knew that a storm would come yet He went on that journey. When the storm came He slept like a baby because He knew that He had said “Let us cross over to the other side” and so they were going to get to the other side. “Let us cross over to the other side” was a declaration and Jesus words had to come to pass regardless of the storms involved.  When they woke Him up, He said  “Peace, be still” and the winds ceased and there was a great calm.

In the same way the Lord has called us all on this healing challenge to cross over from sickness to health. Some like myself may have begin to feel that the symptoms have come back or gotten worse but we must be like Jesus and trust that Gods plans for us will be fulfilled. I didn’t start this healing challenge on my own. In my human nature I would have preferred to go on this journey privately because for one I didn’t want to be vulnerable about what I was experiencing and also having to write these daily devotionals. I’ve never done this challenge before. Even the other challenges I have done such as The Fathers Daughter Challenge, The Bride of Christ Challenge or The Debt Free Challenge, have been easier because the Lord gave a whole Bible book for the entire challenge to study so I could trust that at least I knew the focus of each day but with this one there is no particular book we are studying or referencing. I’ve had to trust God to give me the topic and Bible reading for the day. Even when He gives the topic and scripture, I still have to trust Him to guide me on what to write. Doing this is also a faith walk for me .

We must trust that we would receive our healing and wholeness. Therefore no matter what symptoms we are facing or if they feel worse, we must be like Jesus and have faith and trust in Gods plans for us. Jesus knew that He wasn’t going to die on that boat because He hadn’t fulfilled God’s purpose for Him which was to die on the cross.

So how do you define peace?

The analogy that God gave me for peace is a dove. I remember last year, a white dove came to the glass sliding door in my house. It was so beautiful and so pure. This was not random because in Nigeria to see a white dove flying is rare. Interestingly a few hours later that day there was an extended family feud that almost got out of hand and caused a lot of uncertainty. In hindsight God was sending me a message through the dove that everything was okay. He sent a message of peace and truly everything turned out okay.

So why are doves the symbol of peace?

In the past doves were used to send messages during a time of war. A paper containing a message would be tied to the dove and the dove would go and deliver the message and return to its sender. I guess the reason why doves were used is because doves will always return to its messenger. A dove will fly through an area or airspace going through warfare but will still be able to deliver its message and find its way back to it messenger. (I guess this is why Noah in the Bible used a Dove to check if the floods had gone). This is clearly the definition of peace. The dove is focused on its mission despite all that is going on around it. It does not take its eyes off its mission. Like the story in our Bible reading today when Jesus said to his disciples that they should cross over to the other side and then when they got on the boat there was a storm. The disciples were afraid but Jesus was asleep in that boat. They woke him up and with three words He calmed the storm. How come Jesus was able to sleep through the storm? Well asides from the fact that He is the Son of God and can speak to a storm, Jesus knew that God’s purpose for Him was to die on the cross of Calvary to save humanity from spiritual death and to give us eternal life. He knew that He had not achieved His mission and so there was no way He could die on the boat. In the same way I am aware that I have not achieved my life’s mission and so I would not die anytime soon as long as I walk with God and obey His commandments.

Let us be like the Dove and focus on our mission to receive healing no matter what chaos is going on around us. When you are on a mission you would know that anything that takes your eyes off your mission is a distraction. Earlier on today on Instagram, I testified about my son speaking. When I first said I was going to share the testimony of my son a few weeks ago, a few minutes later I developed symptoms that I found out later was Covid. I could have let those symptoms distract me from doing what God wanted me to do which was to share my testimony online but thankfully I didn’t. I focused on the mission and today I’m able to testify of the wonder working power of God and this is just the beginning.

Dictionary.com defines peace as freedom from disturbance; tranquillity.

Unfortunately, you cannot buy peace in the market. Peace comes from God. The Bible in Philippians 4:6-7 The Passion Translation (TPT) says “6 Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, 7 then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will make the answers known to you through Jesus Christ.”

The New King James version says “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Peace in the eye of the storm

According to the oxford dictionary a storm is a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow. There are different types of storms such as thunderstorm, tornados, cyclones, snow storm, fire storm etc.

One example of a storm is a tropical cyclone. According to the World Health Organisation tropical cyclones, also known as typhoons or hurricanes, are among the most destructive weather phenomena. They are intense circular storms that originate over warm tropical oceans, and have maximum sustained wind speeds exceeding 119 kilometres per hour and heavy rains.”

The beautiful thing is that there is a phenomena called the ‘eye’ in a storm.

At the center of a mature tropical cyclone, air sinks rather than rises. For a sufficiently strong storm, air may sink over a layer deep enough to suppress cloud formation, thereby creating a clear “eye”. Weather in the eye is normally calm and free of clouds, although the sea may be extremely violent. The eye is normally circular and is typically 30–65 km (19–40 mi) in diameter, though eyes as small as 3 km (1.9 mi) and as large as 370 km (230 mi) have been observed.

The cloudy outer edge of the eye is called the “eyewall”. The eyewall typically expands outward with height, resembling an arena football stadium; this phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the “stadium effect”. The eyewall is where the greatest wind speeds are found, air rises most rapidly, clouds reach their highest altitude, and precipitation is the heaviest. The heaviest wind damage occurs where a tropical cyclone’s eyewall passes over land. – Wikipedia

For me it is interesting to note that even in the midst of a storm there in the center there is a place that is calm and at peace. The fact that the eyewall surrounding the eye is where the greatest winds are, is even more of a phenomenon.

I believe Jesus was in the eye of the storm in His mind and spirit which is why He could sleep in the midst of it.

I noticed something interesting in Matthews account of this same story . Please see Matthew 8: 23 -27. If you look at the entire chapter 8, before and after the story of the storm it is filled with stories of healing. From Jesus healing a man with leprosy and then the paralysed servant of the Roman Officer.

Verses 14 -17 actually is actually titled “Jesus heals many people”

Jesus Heals Many People

14 When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. 15 But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him.

16 That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. 17 This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said,

“He took our sicknesses

    and removed our diseases.”[d]

After this is when He faced the storm but once He crossed over to the other side, He healed two demon possessed men. WOWWWWWWWWW. Can you see what God is doing here. He is encouraging us that He has come to heal us. Jesus healed everybody that came to Him. Every single person. there is no single account in the Bible where He turned anyone back. So I want to encourage you today that no matter how you are feeling, whether you feel worse that you will be healed. I trust my Father in Heaven that every single person who has joined this healign challenge and is trusting God for healing will receive their healing and wholeness even me and my family.

How do you receive peace in the midst of a storm.

Let us go back to Philippians 4:6-7 The Passion Translation (TPT) says “6 Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing.

The first thing to do is to tell God what you are anxious about. Don’t keep it in or pretend you are not anxious. He won’t turn you away. He already knows what you are anxious about. He wants you to bring it to Him. You can simply tell Him or even write about it in your journal by writing a letter to Him. Then also remember to thank Him for what He is doing. You can even thank Him for other areas of your life that you are thankful for. His wonderful peace would come upon you. I can testify of this even as of yesterday when I was worrying over someone in my family. Just by talking to Papa about it, I felt so much peace afterwards and He gave me direction.

I particularly love the verse that comes after i.e. verse 8 that says

Keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always. (The Passion Translation)

Meditate on These Things

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. (NKJV)

Think about things that are positive, pure, lovely and of good report. What is the first thing you would do when you no longer feel sick.

A good verse to meditate on is

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

And whose hope is the Lord.

For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,

Which spreads out its roots by the river,

And will not [c]fear when heat comes;

But its leaf will be green,

And will not be anxious in the year of drought,

Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

And whose hope is the Lord.

8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,

Which spreads out its roots by the river,

And will not [c]fear when heat comes;

But its leaf will be green,

And will not be anxious in the year of drought,

Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” – Jeremiah 17: 7-8

Tasks

  1. Look for scriptures on peace and write them down and mediate on them. Every time you feel a symptom declare these verses.
  2. Look for Bible stories where Jesus healed people like stories in Matthew Chapter 8 and meditate on them.
  3. Keep declaring the scriptures and promises of healing you wrote down in day three of the challenge, keep asking for more of the Holy Spirit, continue to cover your self and your situation in the blood of Jesus and do all of these in the name of Jesus
